A couple of paragraphs that introduce the weeks passage with some background and contemporary perspective.
31st July 2017
This week we are in the territory of siblings and their relationship. Of course, as we know, the whole thing is about relationships, not just the sibling stories but the whole of our faith. Indeed every faith: it is how we live in relationship with each other. And as the bible takes us through the many different sibling stories we see the development of sibling relationships. None of them are idealised. None of them are completely bad or completely good but they are very human.
Clearly the Bible has a great deal to teach us about being brothers and sisters, not just with each other (though that can be difficult enough: how many congregations in our church have interim ministers and are trying to work their way through conflict?) but with different faiths.
While the Bible seems to say so much about violence towards others there is a different way of reading it, a deeper way where these sibling stories become the means through which we might find ways to live together between faiths and within faiths. These stories are complex and real, not idealised or abstract. They are real encounters that evolve and grow, just like this thought towards Sunday.
Any hymns you might think of...
