Easter Message

Easter messages came aplenty over the weekend, from all sorts: the Pope, the Moderator, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Prime Minister... wait a minute, the Prime Minister?

Indeed, a sort of sermon/speech about being a Christian country and the Christian values we have: “responsibility, hard work, charity, compassion and pride in working for the common good”. Hmmm. Christian people tend to have these values as much as any other faith becasue of the bigger values of loving neighbour and welcoming strangers (he forgot that last one!). They aren't 'Christian' per se.

Of course we aren't really a Christian country. Part of our heritage is Christian but it is also a whole lot of other things too and at one time the main religion was Christianity though those weren't good times for us as people were punished if they weren't Christian and indeed a particular branch of Christianity depending on the monarch.

An Easter message ought not mention Christian 'values' as no one has yet mentioned a value that isn't also a value of another faith or even political system. And Easter message really ought to offer hope in the fear, freedom in the austerity, new chances in the limiting of life and evidence that resurrection really is all about us all being in the renewal of life together.
