Grumpy Christmas

Apparently Facebook makes you grumpy a University of Copenhagen study suggests. This is indeed true. Christmas also makes people grumpy. My daughter has told me a few times this year that Christmas makes me grumpy. So that means Facebook at Christmas is a dangerous place to be.

But then, perhaps Christmas anywhere is a dangerous place given what happened first time round, where the first songs sung weren't Christmas carols but revolutionary songs, and that those first to the manger were not local and familiar people but people of other religions and cultures, and also that matter of a price on Jesus head from the very beginning. Facebook's grumpiness has got nothing on Christmas. There's also a whole lot of other stuff to make you grumpy too from post-truth politics to today's comments about building up nuclear weapons, political stand-offs, tighter borders, Brexit etc (and a Grumpy Christmas to you too).

The Christmas story however is full of liberal values, of inclusion, and welcome and generosity and speaks out against fear. Christmas is the line in the sand that stops what is negative, narrow and fear-filled winning the day. I'm going to trust Christmas before I trust any of these others.

Suddenly I'm not grumpy any more. Why don't you 'like' this if you decide not to be grumpy any more (even if you are on Facebook).
