Chocolate Teapots

Luke 7:18-35

It’s getting interesting now. Jesus has cured, healed, preached, brought people back from the dead and John the Baptist’s disciples have come to him asking if Jesus is the one or do they have to wait for someone else. Strange?

What body of evidence do you need to convince people?

The problem is Jesus has set out his manifesto (remember the ‘I have come to set free the prisoner and bring good news to the poor’ speech a couple of weeks ago?) but nothing has changed: John is in prison (he may be especially bitter about the setting the prisoner free section), the Romans are still around and Herod continues as the puppet king. You can hear in John’s question a rather strong seam of disappointment.

So what is going on? Perhaps it is about sight and vision and expectation. Perhaps our expectation is to see God in a particular way, usually miraculous, or at least unexpected. We’ve been brought up being told stories of miracles and wonder are literally true almost everyday in the kingdom of God. But when Jesus brought good news to the poor and sight to the blind and freedom to the prisoner, the vision Jesus had wasn’t doing it through miracle, but through healing the relationships between us. Yes there are various miraculous stories but these aren’t about the kingdom. Listen to his stories, his parables, his teaching. There is the kingdom and it was all about renewing relationships between church and people, lords and peasants, neighbour and neighbour.

So, are you the one or do we need to wait for someone else?

You choose.
