Luke 16:19-31

The thing to remember about this parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man is that it is a parable. That means that whatever happens in it is not prophecy that says: this is what is going to happen to everyone who is rich which is just as well for us. It is a parable so that means we can change the ending.

It is a lesson to learn that says: if you continue to carry on the way you are going then you know what is going to happen, so don’t carry on the way you are going.

There is something about heaven being a mirror image of what is happening on earth. Certainly this parable suggests something of the sort. Whether it is or isn’t doesn’t matter as much as realising there is a gulf between rich and poor and perhaps those who imagine wealth is a gift from God rather than generosity ought to read this parable a few times. And that probably means me too!
