Acts 6&7 - Stoning of Stephen

There's not much here you'd want to necessarily celebrate. In fact there is very little light in the whole thing. It offers up quite a miserable version of the faith with a contemporary caveat that what happened here still finds a place in the world for those who are faithful.

This, of course, is not just a Christian problem but a faith-of-any-version problem that has happened throughout the ages.

When did faith become something that was either right or wrong rather than an ever evolving way of exploring meaning in life? When did faith become something that convicts you as a miserable sinner rather than frees you with forgiveness and transformation? When did faith stop you living rather than invite you into the fullness of life?

Those who use faith in the way Stephen experienced it fall into the former categories surely, living by fear, limiting life in others so they didn't lose the power.

But then, none of that is faithful. That's political and economical. Faith surely is the freedom that enables you to live as if you are not tied to this world, a freedom from doctrine and creeds that curtain your experience of the fullness of life. Faith is the conviction you are free of everything that tries to limit life, even death.
