Equal Marriage

The church nationally was debating human sexuality again in a report from the Theological Forum that sought us to continue exploring but to ask the Legal Questions committee to put legislation in place to make it possible to ministers, should they wish, to officiate at equal marriage services as well as the church to apologise over any discrimination and hurt it has caused to gay people.

What is quite moving about this is the size of the votes in support of all of this. Is there a feeling in the church that our understanding of same sex relationships is changing and becoming more culturally acceptable in our religion?

When the church chose to allow remarriage for divorced people there was always the conscience clause and so there will be here. It is a moving day that this stage is possible in the church. I recognise this will hurt some but equally it will bring new life to others. The fact that we can find ways to live with the tension is a mark of mature faith.
