Amos 1:1-2; 5:14-15, 21-24

"But let justice roll down like waters,

and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."

I wonder if there is a bigger act of silence we can take part in this weekend which is not just to stand in silence for a couple of minutes but to actually silence those who denounce and those who speak war and those who enflame and those who do not speak of the love of humanity and the compassion of justice.

What if we silenced those who speak of war, of power, of hero worship, of the "really great" armaments we have responsibility for (but perhaps not the wisdom to go with that responsibility)? What if our news channels silenced all of that and found stories instead that told us about examples of peaceful living, of swords beaten to ploughshares? A whole weekend. What might we feel after that towards each other?

Of course, keeping silent about injustice and tax dodging and secret arms deals isn't good either but what if we extend a silence across a weekend against those who rally for war of any kind, who want to make only one group great again, who separate themselves from neighbours and who think the rich who avoid tax that creates welfare, support for the terrorised and keeps communities safe are clever. This is a bigger conflict than bloody war. It is a bigger silence we offer.

But let justice roll down like waters,

and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
