We light a Light

December 18, 2015

This is from the Carol Service: Nine Carols on Sunday evening at 6.30 (with punch and shortbread afterwards). Come and join us for that, as well as the Nativity Service at 10.30.

When the year slips towards the solstice

and the darkness is at its greatest:

When the stars are silent

in the long shadows of the universe

All: we light a light

When the birds leave us behind

and the earth slows in the damp

When the frost presses on the land

and nature chills in the great freeze

All: we light a light

When the time grows heavy

with the quickening of expectation

When the songs are waiting to be sung

and the words long to be lifted by belief

All: we light a light

When the prophet’s words are running out

and the expectation is real

When the hope is deeply longing

and the song is preparing to be sung

All: We light a light

So we light a light

curse the darkness

and place the song of incarnation

into the solstice darkness

and make way

for light to be born
