We tend to get a lot of American headlines here in the UK none more so at the moment than the US election. But it is interesting isn't it that there too no one is particularly rising to the surface. Even in a country where everything comes down to entertainment (it is increasingly so here - just look at how naming our winter storms has changed how we talk about them or feel unthreatened by them: you can't be too scared of a storm called Henry!) no one rises to the surface even with Donal Trump.
And in the blue corner it is almost a draw. The Democrat campaign has been bubbling away without anyone noticing particularly or being all that interested but it starts with a draw.
Why is this: no real characters? Well, that's not true. You can't get more entertaining than Donald. No clear blue or red water? Well, while there are differences it is only by degree rather than understanding the world in a different way.
I wonder if is it lack of trust or hope (the same thing sometimes), lack of belief that things can change. As we become more fearful of each other then we don't actually want change but want to find better ways to hunker down and isolate ourselves. It is just about how much isolation you want and how quickly you want it.
Which isn't what you find in the Bible. Well, that's not true, but there is a strong polemic against that talk. Dare anyone speak generously anymore and be difference?
