Why does every election end up the same? Not the result, but the getting there. Brexit and the US elections are all about the personalities. It is all personality driven. I'm not blaming the politicians (for once). I'm sure they are as fed up with it as many but a society that is always needing entertained end up with elections that are all about the rise and fall and rise again and fall again of the personalities none of us have any real sense of what their policies are except in general terms.
Jesus seemed to have same problems with his kingdom policies: people catching only the headlines of the sideshows: he's the one who... did you see what he did to... I'm sure I heard him chastise his disciples when...
Part of me gets annoyed at this because it's just tabloid politics and given the media is meant to simply reflect what we think (ha ha) it appears therefore few of us are interested beyond the gossip and fall-outs.
The other side of me sees something hopeful, that people are perhaps interested in each other sometimes for the good. At least it is about people (though usually only the very rich and powerful). It's a long way to go to get to the level of being interested in people and their relationship with neighbour or justice or peace but might it be our seed of hope and a place to begin.
The good news is that eventually, for many, the news of Jesus got past the level of gossip and became world changing, and order reforming, so we haven't lost everything in these elections... yet.
