Holy Week

March 23, 2016

Just to remind you that the 2pm (afternoon) service is in New Kilpatrick on Friday and the 7.30pm service is in Killermont.

Talking of Holy Week, how do you best travel through it? I'm genuinely looking for honest opinions on how best to engage with the week.

Traditionally we have done this ecumenically but is this the best way to do so? There is hardly a service where someone isn't missing because of tradition both denominationally and congregationally. We just can't all share Maundy Thursday but we also have our local traditions, or many do, that stop us all gathering together.

Do people prefer the sermon type service we generally offer in the evening or would you prefer more often the creative variety with more voices, image, symbol and multi sensory that we have occasionally done? Or services that tell the story more and let us experience the events and re-imagine them and even be there in some way rather than explain them away or reason it down to manageable portions we analyse in a sermon?

Would people prefer traveling Holy Week in their own place or at least in more local partnerships and have ecumenical services at other times that are linked with no festival and where we don't hit problems of local traditions as we do in Holy Week.

The reason for asking is that the Holy Week services are never well attended from any congregation or denomination. While some like it, by far the majority see no need to travel together or mark this season in this particular way. Maybe people don't see the need at all. That's not to say not to do it but to rethink why we do it, who we do it for and thus shape a style for that particular group of people.
