Bake-Off is back. That's a good thing. I think. Starts tomorrow. A nation awaits. If we thought the Olympics was exciting, we have no idea what is in store for us in the Bake-Off tent.

And it is all so secret apparently. No one has been told much except they'll be baking! Except the contestants. It seems we have all the usual characters back, they just look different again: morphed into different faces and background but all the perfect variety of stereotypes will be there from a Woman's Guild Mother, to a young studenty person who has little experience, from an awkward male to some laid back trendy. Or something like that.

Nothing wrong with that at all but it does illustrate how comfortable we are with formulas and knowing what to expect.

We're starting some consultation as a congregation with the breadth of our community and perhaps we'll hear a lot about stereotyping: what we think others are like in our community and what others think about us.

We best respond, perhaps, to stereotypes. We have a handle on them: there's a particular way we have learned to respond. The exciting and scariest part is when we move beyond that and learn how to relate to those who don't fit. But then, is that another reality TV show...?
