Refugee Response

November 23, 2016

Our Refugee Response Group met tonight. Another good meeting with ideas and follow-through with some practical actions to help and inform us.

We will deliver all the clothing and children's stuff tomorrow - thanks to all those who volunteered to transport and also to all those who donated. There is a lot of stuff.

Light of Hope: Following a light for Aleppo vigil we are moving that into Advent and inviting people to place a candle in their windows through advent. Create a candle holder of buy a special one in such a way neighbours ask about it. When they do, provide a leaflet to give to them explaining this. Give them a tealight and holder too and let the light grow. Please share this idea. You can download leaflets from our website ( and click on the Refugee Response box.

Among other things we are going to hold a social event for refugees in January sometime: a ceilidh, some food, some Scottish traditions etc to help folk settle and for us to build relationships with those new to Scotland. Watch this space for more.

We're offering services of the community in teaching English as a second language and money and budgeting etc, all the skills we have locally.

We are looking at ways we can get more fully involved in helping the council to settle more refugees and asylum seekers.

Also looking at a way of gathering info on particular items people might have to offer such as instruments and kitchen things and electrical goods and create a file of who has these items and then call on them specifically when they are needed.

Also looking at way for those who are musical to get instruments and set up some musical groups so everyone can play together.

Lots of practical suggestions, all liking in to already established networks. We believe it is best to support those who already have the experience and wisdom rather than start another group.
