Luke 19:29-44

This is a guy who is hanging on to love until it kills him. The Triumphal Entry really isn’t triumphal. It’s the last breath almost. Jesus isn’t riding in as if he’s got it all worked out and any time soon the angel armies are going to arrive and crown him messiah.

This is a guy who is hanging on to love until it kills him. He can avoid this moment, but it will chase him down because the world does that to those who get too big for their shoes, or when their shoes are bigger that the world’s average. Something like this was always going to happen.

This is a guy who is hanging on to love until it kills him. And does he yet know that; that love is dangerous and love is a death warrant? This is like some kind of carnival of death. The pawns are all being shifted and we miss the conspiracy if we read only this story and Easter day.

This is a guy who is hanging on to love until it kills him. This is no show of strength. This is the denial of might. There is no wink to the audience as if to say, “watch what happens next, there is a trick coming up.”

This is a guy who is hanging on to love until it kills him. There is nothing planning, worked out, escape routes put in place, twists in the tail. There is no conspiracy of heaven, no ace up the divine sleeve.

This is the guy who is hanging on to love until it kills him. Anything and everything that happens after Friday is a surprise.
