Tea for two, three or more

May 2, 2017

There is something unique about tea that makes it what it is and apparently researchers have found what that 'something' is. They have mapped the genome to find out what gives the tea leaf its amazing flavour.

It is however extremely complicated and comprehensive. The one bush gives us all our tea leaves of whatever colour we prefer: green, black, white etc. But tea itself must be a big lesson for the world with all its comprehensive and complex issues for when you bring them together you can make something that really does taste fabulous, but more than that, by sharing a cup of tea all the worlds problems seem to be a whole lot more managable.

Okay all that is a wee bit daft if not flippant, but in truth there is a metaphor in there for us in tasting how good God is because it is never going to be a simple taste, but hugely complex with multiple layers of taste as each ones stories are tangled together.

So in some weird way we can imagine tea as an image of the kingdom: multi-ayers, with a variety of flavours, and so many different varieties from the one leaf. These are important insights for us today when we have a politics that is trying to reduce the rich layers of our diverse humanity so we only taste one flavour such as FREXIT, BREXIT, AMERICANISM etc

The other, last thing to say is that no one will ever be able to work out the genome of the kingdom and those who think they have it sussed have just proved they haven't. It's ever going to be a diverse and multi flavoured kingdom is the reign of God.
