Knitting Projects

From the Heart

At this challenging time when COVID-19 is affecting so many people, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are looking at ways their nursing and midwifery staff can support families following the death of their loved one.

A small token may bring them some comfort so an appeal has gone out to the knitting community to knit small hearts that can be offered to bereaved families, and to patients who can't receive visitors.

Knitters are asked to use clean wool and to deliver the hearts in re-sealable plastic bags clearly marked with the date, so that staff can store them in a safe place for five days before use.

This is a project that could keep us all occupied and may be a good way to get the kids started on knitting! Simple free to use patterns can be found here

Send your knitted hearts to: 'From the Heart' campaign, NHSGGC, JB Russell House, Gartnavel Royal site, 1055 Gt Western Road, Glasgow G12 0XH. Please also include your name and email address or postal address.

Knit for Peace

If you enjoy knitting and would like to be part of an international movement, you could join Knit for Peace.

There are now more than 15,000 KFP knitters in the UK working on various projects.

As well as knitting for international causes, KFP have uncovered unmet needs here in Glasgow. They provide a range of knitted items for local agencies, including baby clothes for the Red Cross.

They can provide and deliver wool and will pick up completed knitting.

Please look at the website for patterns and email or phone Ann Gilmore from the local Bearsden and Milngavie group to find out more.
